Related to their social studies unit on Governments, 5th grade EAL students have been reading biographies of two different leaders who have had major political effects, Thurgood Marshall and Barack Obama. They have been making connections between the lives of these two influential people and discussing cause and effect - how their actions affected others, and how the experiences of their early years affected their decisions and actions later in life. Students have been examining important academic vocabulary such as affect, effect, cause, experience, reason, and evidence through discussions of these biographies and by giving reasons and evidence for their opinions.

Hello and Happy New Year! We are into our second week of school this new year, so I thought I'd send a quick update as to what we are doing in EAL right now. 5th grade is wrapping up their science unit on Forces, Motion, and Simple Machines by writing about an imaginary machine invention that they have designed. They are using their scientific understanding of Newton's 3 Laws of Motion and the unit vocabulary to explain how their machine works, at the same time as working on their writing skills to develop clear, well-organized, and interesting paragraphs using technical vocabulary and correct conventions. In 4th grade EAL we have begun the new science unit on Electricity by discussing why electricity is useful and reading non-fiction text about how electricity has changed the work people do. We have also been examining class writing samples to look at ways we can improve our writing. In 5th grade EAL today we were treated to a cultural presentation by one of our students, Roy. Roy volunteered to do a presentation about Hanukkah, and he did an excellent, professional job of teaching the class about Hanukkah's history and traditions. The class was engaged and very appreciative. Well done, Roy, and thank you for sharing it with us! |
